How to open an AI file on Android

Why your phone says it cannot open it

Android has no built-in handler for .ai. The extension belongs to Adobe Illustrator, a desktop drawing program, so a phone sees an unknown binary and offers you a list of apps that cannot read it either. The file itself is fine — nothing is corrupt, and nothing needs converting.

The part nobody tells you: it is usually a PDF

Since Illustrator 9, saving a file has a checkbox called Create PDF Compatible File, and it is on by default. When it is on, Illustrator writes a complete PDF into the same file. Open a typical .ai in a hex editor and the first four bytes are literally %PDF.

That matters because it means the artwork can be drawn on your phone at full vector quality — every curve, every hairline — without converting anything and without sending the file anywhere.

Step by step

1. Install a viewer that opens .ai directly. Pathside does; it draws the file on the device.
2. Find the file where it arrived: the chat, the email, the Drive folder, or Files → Downloads.
3. Tap it. If Android offers a chooser, pick the viewer. If it opens the wrong app, use Open with — long-press the file in Files, then Open with.
4. Pinch to zoom. In a viewer that redraws from the vector, the edges stay sharp however far you go in.

If it opens but looks blurry

That is the giveaway that the app uploaded your file to a server, rendered it there, and sent back a compressed image. You are zooming into a JPEG of your artwork. It also means the file left your phone — worth knowing if it is a client's logo under an NDA.

If it will not open at all

Two honest possibilities:

• It was saved without PDF compatibility. Rare, but it happens when someone unticks that box to save space. There is no way to draw the artwork from such a file on a phone; ask for it again as a PDF or an SVG.
• It is not really an .ai file. Names lie. A file renamed from .cdr or .eps keeps its old insides. A viewer that reads the bytes rather than the name will tell you what it actually is.

What about editing?

Nothing on Android edits Illustrator files properly, and anything promising it is either uploading your work to a server or rasterising it. If you need to change the artwork, that is desktop work. If you need to check it — the right logo, the right colourway, the right lockup, before it goes to a printer — a phone is enough.

Opening it from a chat app

Most of these files arrive in WhatsApp, Telegram or Gmail rather than as a download, and each one behaves slightly differently. In WhatsApp, tap the attachment and then the share icon, and pick the viewer from the sheet. In Gmail, use the download arrow first — opening straight from the preview often hands the file to Google's own viewer, which does not read .ai. In Drive, use the three-dot menu and Open with; Drive's preview will tell you it cannot display the file, which is about Drive, not about your file.

Why the file has no thumbnail

Android builds thumbnails only for formats it knows. An .ai file gets the generic document icon, which makes a folder of artwork look identical file to file. The file names are all you have to go on, which is worth remembering when someone sends you six versions of a logo and asks which one you want.

Checking it is the right file before you reply

Open it, then step through the artboards. Brand files routinely hold the same mark six ways — full colour, one colour, reversed, stacked, horizontal, and an icon alone — and approving "the logo" when there are six is how the wrong one ends up printed. Zoom in on the text and read it letter by letter: a wrong phone number survives every check except that one.
